Wall insulation in Carson City NV - filled walls and rooms that stay comfortable

Cold outside walls and drafty rooms usually mean empty wall cavities. We check them for damp, fill them and close up neatly.

Is it worth insulating the walls in an older Carson City house?

Wall insulation in Carson City usually means filling the empty spaces inside your existing walls without tearing them open, by drilling small holes, blowing insulation in and closing the holes back up.

Most calls I get about walls start with a room that never warms up, or an outside wall that feels cold when you put your hand on it. In an older house, that usually means the wall cavities, the hollow spaces between the studs, were never filled. Here at J&K Carson City Spray Foam Insulation, I'd rather find out what's actually in your walls before telling you what to put in them, because some walls need a repair before they need insulation.

The price mostly comes down to how much wall we're filling, what we fill it with and whether we work from inside or from outside through the siding. Spray foam is usually the most expensive way to insulate a wall that's already built, so choosing it raises the cost of the job. The schedule turns on whether any damp or damaged walls have to be fixed first and whether your job needs a permit, and your estimate puts a figure on your walls once I've seen them.

What happens when you call about wall insulation in Carson City?

From the first call to the last bit of cleanup, here's who you'll be dealing with and what each step gets you.

You call or send a request

You call (775) 227-5588 or fill out the form, and most of the time it's me who calls you back to set up a visit. Tell me which rooms feel cold and whether you've noticed any damp spots, so I know what to look for.

I look at your walls with you

I do every estimate visit myself. We've been at this since 2017, and I came to it after years behind a desk, which taught me I'd rather hold a flashlight than a stapler. I tell you what I see, put together an estimate and go over it with you before you decide anything.

Licensed and insured installers, with a lead on every job

If you go ahead, our installers do the work and a lead installer runs your job from setup to cleanup, so there's one person on site who knows the plan. We're fully licensed and insured.

How we do wall insulation, in the right order

Before we drill anything, I look for signs of damp or damage in the siding, around the doors and windows and on the inside of the wall, because insulation packed against a wet wall just holds the problem in. If I find something, it gets repaired first, so plan for that repair in your budget before the insulation. Once the walls are sound, we pick the material together, and for walls that are already closed up I usually point people toward blown-in, loose fill blown through a hose, and I'll tell you plainly if your house is the exception. We also decide together whether you'd like the little holes patched or hidden behind a chair rail molding, a strip of trim along the wall about waist high, so nothing about the finished room surprises you.

Walls are only part of why a room feels drafty, since air slips in around outlets, window trim and the bottom of the wall, so filling the cavities works best alongside our air sealing services, which close those gaps. If the complaint is cold floors more than cold walls, the cause is often below you, and basement insulation is where I'd look next.

  • Every wall checked for damp or damage before we drill
  • Small access holes into each empty stud bay
  • Insulation blown into each bay until it's full
  • Holes patched or covered with chair rail, as we agreed
  • Floors covered during the work and cleaned after

How a wall insulation job goes

Once the plan is settled, here's what the job itself looks like at your house.

  1. Clear and cover the work area

Our installers move furniture away from the walls we're filling and cover the floors, because drilling and blowing insulation kicks up dust. If you've got anything fragile hanging on those walls, it's easiest to take it down before we arrive.

  2. Drill the access holes

We drill a small hole into each empty stud bay, the space between two studs, from inside or from outside depending on what we agreed. From outside, siding comes off as its type allows, and vinyl, aluminum and steel can usually be loosened with a siding tool, so ask how we'd handle yours.

  3. Fill every bay

We blow insulation into each bay until it's full, paying attention around windows and blocking, the short boards across some bays that can leave a space half done. A missed bay stays a cold spot, so the lead installer checks each one before it's closed.

  4. Close up, clean up and walk through

We close the holes the way you chose and clean up after ourselves. Then I walk you through the finished walls so you know exactly what we did in there.

Wall insulation questions from Carson City homeowners

How much does blown-in wall insulation cost?

Blown-in wall insulation, installed, usually costs about $3.90 to $4.60 per square foot across the US. That's a national figure, not our quote, and your wall area, your siding and any repairs needed first will move your number. For your house, I measure the walls on the estimate visit and go over what I found with you.

Should I insulate my walls when I replace my siding?

Yes, if new siding is already planned, that's usually the best time to add a continuous layer of insulation over the outside of an older wood-frame wall. With the old siding off, the outside of the wall is already open, so it makes sense to plan both jobs together. Mention your siding plans when you call and I'll factor them in.

Can I insulate my own walls in Nevada?

You can, if it's your own home that you live in and you're not improving it to sell or rent out. In that case you can be exempt from contractor licensing, but you have to apply to the Nevada State Contractors Board for the exemption first. If you'd rather hand it off, give us a call.

Who sets the rules for your walls in Carson City

In Carson City, the Building Division issues construction permits, and altering an existing residential structure requires submitting documents through its portal. Its process includes plan review, permit issuance and inspection, and if you're planning a project on your own, the Building Division is the place to ask. The rules differ between Carson City, the counties and the cities around us, so we check with the office that covers your address, and if your job needs a permit, we take care of the paperwork with them.

Above the city sits the state. Nevada's Governor's Office of Energy adopts the most recent international energy code, and local governments follow it and can add stricter rules of their own. We're based in Carson City and work across the cities around it, from Reno and Sparks down to Gardnerville and up to Incline Village, plus plenty of places in between, and a lot of what we run into is older houses with walls that were never filled.
