Closed-cell foam insulation in Carson City NV - a rigid seal where space is tight

A drafty vaulted ceiling, a cold room over the garage or a clammy basement wall? Closed-cell foam insulates and seals in one firm layer.

White closed-cell spray foam fills the spaces between exposed wooden wall studs.

When is closed-cell foam worth the higher price?

Closed-cell foam insulation is a dense spray foam that hardens into a rigid layer, and in Carson City homes we use it where a roof slope, a room over the garage or a basement wall needs to stop drafts and damp in very little space.

If you're looking into it, you've probably got a room that never feels right. Maybe it's a vaulted ceiling with shallow rafters, a cold floor over the garage or a basement wall that feels damp to the touch. Those are the spots where regular insulation either won't fit deep enough or doesn't hold up when it gets wet, and that's where closed cell earns a look.

The price mostly comes down to how many square feet we're covering, how thick the foam has to go and how easy the space is to get into, plus any old insulation that has to come out first. The schedule turns on that same size and access, and on the stretch of time you'll spend out of the house while the foam cures. You'll get your own number and a plan for that day from the estimate.

I do your estimate visit myself

I started this business in 2017 after years behind a desk, and I still do every estimate visit myself, flashlight in hand, in the attic, crawl space or basement with you. Then I put together an estimate and go over what I found before you decide anything.

Fully licensed and insured, with a lead installer on each job

We're fully licensed and insured. Our installers do the spraying, and a lead installer runs each job so you know who's in charge on your install day.

Cleanup and a walk-through at the end

We clean up after ourselves, and then I walk you through the finished job so you know exactly what's up there and why. Your satisfaction, guaranteed.

How we decide on closed-cell foam insulation, and how we put it in

Closed cell costs more, so I only suggest it where it earns the extra money, like a tight roof slope or a wall that tends to get damp. If air sealing, closing the gaps where air leaks in, plus a top-up of blown-in loose fill will do the job, I'll tell you that instead, unless your ductwork runs through the attic and needs that space sealed around it. Where foam is the right call, we clear out anything soaked or full of droppings first so we're not burying the problem, then spray an even layer that seals the gaps around pipes, wires and the hatch as it goes.

Not every part of a house needs the dense stuff. Where there's room for thickness and moisture isn't a worry, open-cell foam insulation usually costs less and does the job. We also spray closed cell in shops, offices and rentals through our commercial insulation work.

  • Removal of old insulation that's wet, matted or full of droppings before any foam goes on
  • Masking for floors, windows and anything else that shouldn't get foam on it
  • Sealing around pipes, wiring, can lights and the attic hatch as part of the spray
  • Full coverage out to the edges and corners, where foam jobs most often run thin
  • Trimming the cured foam flush with the framing so it's tidy and out of the way

How the install goes, start to finish

We work in this order on purpose, because foam that goes on before the space is ready is hard to fix later.

  1. Clear and prep the space

We move what's stored there, pull any bad insulation and mask off everything nearby, because foam sticks to whatever it touches. You'll know the re-entry time, the point when it's okay to come home, before we start.

  2. Seal and spray

Our lead installer works through the space bay by bay so the foam fills each cavity and bonds to the framing. That bond is what stops the drafts, so we take our time at corners and around anything that pokes through.

  3. Let it cure with the house empty

The foam needs time to cure and air out while nobody's home. We keep the work area set up for that and don't rush it.

  4. Trim and check the coverage

Once the foam is firm, we trim anything that sticks out past the framing. Then we check the edges and corners for thin spots, since that's where coverage tends to come up short.

Questions about closed-cell foam in Carson City

How much does closed-cell spray foam insulation cost near Carson City?

Closed-cell spray foam in the Reno area usually runs about $1 to $1.50 per board foot, which is one square foot of foam an inch thick. Your total depends on how much area we cover and how deep it goes. I'll measure all of that on the estimate visit.

Is closed-cell foam better than open-cell foam for my house?

It's better where you need a rigid, water-resistant layer in a tight space, like a cathedral ceiling or an unvented attic, and open cell is often the better buy everywhere else. Closed cell is rated at R-6 per inch, R-value being how well insulation slows heat, and at its usual thickness it blocks moisture vapor and won't soak up water. It costs more mainly because there's more material packed into the same space, and that's also what makes it hard and tough to compress.

Can closed-cell foam go on basement walls and rim joists?

Yes, and it's one of the best places for it, because research on basements found the most consistently effective setup puts a water-tolerant insulation right against the inside of the foundation wall. On the rim joist, the band of wood sitting on top of the foundation, spray foam stops drafts and insulates in one step. Closed cell does that with a thinner layer than open cell needs.

How long do we have to stay out of the house after spray foam insulation?

Plan on at least 24 hours away, because federal consumer safety staff advise homeowners to leave during installation and for at least a day after. Line up a place to stay for the kids and pets, and we'll go over the safety steps with you before the crew starts. If anyone at home has asthma, respiratory allergies, a skin condition or a past reaction to spray foam chemicals, the same staff suggest reading the product information first, and another insulation may suit your house better.

Permits for closed-cell foam in Carson City and nearby

In Carson City, permits go through the Carson City Building Division, and its online portal covers work that alters an existing house, which is where most foam jobs land. The city only takes an application signed by the property owner, an authorized agent or a licensed contractor, so if your job needs one, we take care of the paperwork for you. Nevada brings in newer energy codes on a set cycle, and local governments can add stricter rules of their own, which is one more reason we check before we start.

We're based in Carson City and work across the cities around it, from Reno and Sparks down to Gardnerville and up to Incline Village, plus plenty of places in between. The rules differ between Carson City, the counties and those cities, so we check with the office that covers your address. Out here we see a lot of vaulted ceilings, rooms over garages and older basements, and those are the spots where closed cell usually earns its keep.
